Synthesis of inorganic compounds

Basics

Here, I detail the calculation to get the mass of each element to obtain a stoichiometric compound.

Compounds materials of the types \(A_x B_y\) or \(A_x B_y C_z\) that are binary and ternary materials respectively. The indexes x, y and z represent the stoichiometric amount of each element A, B, C, respectively.

Usually, the elements can be purchased individually. If we want to make high-quality materials, we should buy high-purity elements (e.g. 99.99% = 4N or 99.999% = 5N). The purity of the elements can alter the physical properties of the material.

Below, I made a script to calculate the individual mass of each element to obtain a certain total mass of compound. Detailed formulae and some steps for the synthesis of comounds are given is the document HERE.

Compound masses calculator

Instructions:

  1. Choose the element in the periodic table
  2. Enter the stoichiometric number and click "Add element"
  3. Do the first 2 steps for all the elements (up to 5 elements)
  4. Enter the total mass you want to obtain and click "Go" to get the mass of each element
